    Credence Clearwater Revival.

reminding me of happy days living in Canada. Good company, good times, bloody awful rye.
  • Starting the working week with Thelonious Monk.

He's like a cleanser for the palate. Totally himself and always surprising.
  • Paul Bley - Play Blue. Oslo Concert
  • Cymande in session on iPlayer...clicky (they come on at about 1 hour 40 minutes in)

Welcome! They really were great, weren't they?

I was driving at the time, I had almost 200 miles to do so I couldn't log in to Chews to let you know.

I'm glad Dave got my quick text to you. That's teamwork, that is.

And I spread the news to others...
Your vigilance and kindness spread ripples beyond me...
    :)
And yes. They were great on the show!
    Thanks again.

This is fabulous. A duo recording that doesn't turn in on itself, excluding the listener from a private conversation.

Bassist William Parker and Alto player Oliver Lake play with real authority yet sound relaxed. Unbelievably, this is the first time they've played together on record.

And, who's Roy? Trumpeter Roy Campbell, who left the body in January of last year.
  • GoGo Penguin - v2.0

If you're into EST, then you'll probably like this Mancunian piano trio.

I've been listening a lot to this Album lately Dave. Some good music and it's very well recorded.

Amazing! I love it when someone's been listening to the same stuff :-)

Horace Tapscott Quintet - The Giant Awakens
  • for those of you with deteriorating eye sight, that was Beaucoup Fish. Good chill tunes, or just insipid, it's a point of debate chez suzy6toes.
  • Hiya Suze. Whereyabin?
  • As part of my Ornette Coleman marathon...

    The Complete Science Fiction Sessions
  • Starting the day with a little Sun Ra.

    As you should, too ;-)
  • Wadada Leo Smith - Human Rights
  • John Coltrane - Offering. Live at Temple University
  • It's wonderful to see Ornette playing to such a large audience:

I saw Ornette and Prime Time a few years later than this at Hackney Empire. It was an experience! :-)
  • Suspend your suspicions now, chaps (and notable chapesses) and give this beautiful album a listen.

I bought it as student in Birmingham the year it came out, and it's a stayer, even if the synths are a bit basic.

  • A bit of hipster madness for you :-)

  • And more "it's a motherf***er"

  • Space is the Place!

  • Elvin Jones - Live at the Village Vanguard

Not all Elvin's albums are great, but he's on steaming form on this one.

    This is excellent.
However, I imagine that there is little point in listening to it without at least one 18 inch bass speaker in one's system...
    @-)

  • Robert Wyatt - Old Rottenhat
  • KonKoma - KonKoma

You might like this, Ben. It's African funky stuff by a London band, with its roots in the 70s. I'm listening to it on Tidal.
  • Re KonKoma...
    Pah! No time to audition...
Thanks Dave, on your recommendation X_X I have just a cheapish promo copy of the CD from DIscogs.
    I await it's greatness...

Seriously, it looks right up my street. Thanks for thinking of me! =D>
  • OMG. You spend real money on my recommendation???

    That's faith. Or foolhardiness :-)

A kind of an electro dub thang.
    It's OK. 6.2/10 ...?
The dub and the electro parts seem to be less than, rather than more than, the sum of their parts more often than I'd like, but it's never offensive.
  • Ben. If you want some more modern dancy/slightly dubby real African stuff, try this:

    Mbongwana Star - From Kinshasa

It's a truly fantastic piece of work, to my ears (the usual proviso around here :-D ).

Now, in contrast to the above, this is definitely more than the sum of its parts.
I can't say that I actually like what the drums, bass, keyboards are voice are doing, but all together...Nice. I can see why this is so well reviewed. Nice vibe to it.
Have just notced that I was born right in the middle of its recording too. A little personal connection there... B-)
    7.1 / 10.
(EDIT - revised up to 7.2 / 10 following badgering from Dave)

(And yes, I've started scoring albums out of 10. Let's own these toonz!)

How can you give GSH such a low score?

As I've said before, he's one of my personal gods, so I'm thoroughly biased.
  • Giving the Disrupt a spin... Never heard of it before.
  • I don't think I have any albums that I could award higher than a 9.5.
A 9.5 / 10 album would be this one from Cymande (my musical heroes)...

Simply in my opinion, it feels like I need about 2.4 points of headroom to separate Winter in America from Second time Round, so about 7.1 feels right to me.
Although that I think that makes Second time round 34% better than Winter in America. Which seems a bit high. Feels more like about 31% better. Which means I should amend my Winter in America score to 7.25. 2 decimal places seems too much, so I'll call it 7.2 (7.3 just feels to high to me).

What would be your score for Winter in America Dave?
  • Winter in America? Actually, not much more. Say 8 as it's a bit patchy.

    8.2 =D>
Unusually, an album that I enjoy as much as it's dub version! (Both on the rip of the CD. :)>-  )
  • IMHO the album is better than the dub.
  • Score them Dave. Score them!
